HIM Technician/Medical Coder
EPHC currently has an opening for a Certified Coder to work in our Health Information Department. This is a full time, benefitted position. The Health Information Coder is responsible for conversion of verbal descriptions of diagnosis and procedures contained in the medical record into complete and accurate codes by using recognized and adopted classification systems and medical record conventions. This position is challenged to remain aware of the continual changes in treatment modes, and new procedures and to perform coding when physician documentation is vague or missing.
Records all diagnosis that affects the current stay. Codes all conditions that exist at the time of admission or which develop subsequently
and affect the treatment received or the length of stay. Codes all procedures performed in the operating rooms and any other significant
procedure performed in any patient care area of the facilities. Codes using the most current encoder software program to obtain accurate code
assignments in the proper sequencing. Assigns appropriate CPT codes for all outpatient surgical procedure, and provides backup to the HIM Practitioner as necessary.
The incumbent works closely with members of the medical staff, other HIM staff, Business Office Staff, physician office staff, other ancillary departments and vendors.
Education & Experience Requires high school diploma or equivilant.
Addition education and experience in coding is
required. Experience in a hospital HIM Department
within a hospital or medical office is required.
Extensive knowledge of medical terminology is
Skills: Ability to understand and operate computers and
encoding software. Good communication skills during
interaction with all customers including employees
and the public. CCA or CCS certified
Knowledge: Knowledge of hospital coding practices is required.
Basic understanding of general office procedures is
desired. Overall understanding of HIM Department
daily operations is required.
